Sherri, Mary and I were partners at the National Park Service classroom activity today. We saw a drawing of Bishop White's son, who looked sickly and whose portrait notes said he died in 1820. We wondered what he died of, so I texted it to myself to look up later. Yeah, I'm a geek like that...
Anyway, I found this PDF from NPS, which says on page 8 that he lived to 1859.
I'm confused. Anyone have any insight on this?
I'll ask Jeffrey!

ReplyDeleteThe 1820 date on the label for the portrait of Thomas Harrison White is a reference to the date the portrait was painted. It was painted by Benjamin Trott between the years of 1800 and 1820. Mr. Trott rarely signed or dated
his works, hence the vague date for the portrait.
Thomas Harrison White lived from 1779 to 1859. I do not know the cause of his death, but at age 80 one might safely call it "old age".
A-ha! Thank you! We saw 1800-1820 on the bottom of the pic and wrongly assumed that was his dates of life, not the range during which the picture was painted. Please relay my thanks to Jeffrey! :)
